One day at a time
The thought of forever can daunting. Becoming sober is a huge achievement but small steps will get you there. A sober counter can help track progress. It's great for calculating when you are going to hit milestones so you can celebrate your sober success.
Press fast-forward
If a midweek drink after work results in you throwing a sicky the next day because you got in at 2am armed with more cans and a kebab, it’s probably best swerved. Pressing fast-forward is a great tip for when one drink doesn't stop at just one.
Rediscover you
Find the other things you love or do something completely new. Embarking on new adventure or hobby will be its own reward, fill your time and increase your self-esteem.
Treat yourself
This is really important, particularly if that pint or glass of wine was your reward for a hard day done. This can be a cup of tea, slice of cake or booking that holiday.
Attitude of gratitude
Be thankful for the things you have and take joy in the littlest thing. Sobriety has given me both serenity and a presence of mind to truly exist in the moment and appreciate what life has to offer.
Combat cravings
These are surmountable. Exercise creates an endorphin rush far better than that first sip. There are also psychological hacks A craving is basically an internal tantrum screaming for something you can't have. Distract yourself from the urge, remind yourself you don't need it and you find the desire to drink will subside.
Don’t give up
I have lost many things from being drunk: minor things like phones, keys and dignity to the big whammies of friendships and even sanity. You gain more than you lose when you quit booze. Be kind to yourself and keep on keeping on.
You’re not alone
Find your sober people, whether it’s alcohol-free meet ups or making new friends online. There is so much support out there to help you stay focused.
