Getting a decent AF red wine substitute is notoriously difficult. The usual approximation is something that tastes like grape juice mixed with balsamic vinegar. Hmmm. Delicious.
I'm happy to report that Moderato is different. Whilst there is no denying that this is non-alcoholic, made with grenache grapes, it is palatable and reminiscent of a very light bodied red. With an aroma of cherries, it has the right level of acidity and tannin.
When you remove the alcohol, you do take away the deep flavor and viscosity red wine has but Moderato has enough character to be enjoyed on its own as well as paired with food.
Red wine was my drink of choice in the pre-AF days, so it was something I grieved saying goodbye to. However, it is nice to know there is an alternative out there, although you need to be prepared that it will not be the same.
Moderato Red is currently priced at £9.00 online at Club Soda.
